Genevieve Peterson
Founder and
President, Board of Governors

Genevieve Petersen

Hi, I'm Genevieve Peterson, the Founder and President of the Sweet Harmony Performing Arts Group. I still remember the very first time I ever set foot on a stage. My kindergarten teacher gave me permission to create an imaginary world and I was hooked! However, in real life, I was very shy. I remember a moment in Junior High when my friend leaned over during choir and said, "You have a pretty voice. You should sing louder." I was shocked. Although I loved singing, acting and dancing, I didn't really think I was very good. But I kept trying. I became involved in community, church and school productions. I participated in choir, theater and jazz band. My Junior year of high school I auditioned for The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and was admitted as a vocal performance major. This was a life-changing event. My senior year I returned to Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, CA with greater self-confidence in all areas of my life. I had a fantastic year which included working as the stage manager for our fall show, starring as the lead in our spring school musical and winning the Best Actress of the Year Award. I attended college at Brigham Young University, but realized that it was not the right time to pursue a career in performance. Instead, I accepted my most challenging role to date: being a wife and mother! I took a break from the performing arts to raise and home school my six wonderful children.

However, now that my children are growing up, I am so grateful that life has offered me a chance to combine my family life with the performing arts again. It is my joy to work with so many wonderful youth and parents in our performance groups.

Karen Phippen
Vice President, Board of Governors

Karen Phippen

Karen is thrilled to be part of this incredible organization. She has been directing backstage traffic/ herding large groups of children since Sweet Harmony began 12 years ago and is excited to continue as the Vice President.

Karen started singing in choirs and doing musical theater in the 4th grade where she performed in her favorite role, Calamity Jane.

Karen is a birth and postpartum doula, and is very passionate about maternal mental health. She volunteers for PSI and runs a postpartum support group as well.

In her few moments of free time she hikes, runs, bikes, swims, and sings at the top of her lungs to keep some semblance of sanity.

Maretta Scott
Treasurer, Board of Governors

Maretta Scott

Hello! My name is Maretta Scott and I am so honored to be on the Sweet Harmony Performing Arts board of governors. I am currently finishing my associates degree at Salt Lake Community College with a degree in American Sign Language studies.

I used to be a part of this group when I was in junior high and high school, and I loved every minute of it. I have always loved music, and so being a part of the choir was so amazing. Theatre has also been important to me as well because I love supporting the arts and participating when I can.

I'm so exited to be a part of this community again! I love the performing arts community because it is a place where individuals can be themselves. It also give individuals a chance to shut the world out and be a different character and present a story that they are passionate about. I love the performing arts, and I'm so excited to be able to be a part of creating happiness for children and their audiences!

I am so grateful to be a part of Sweet Harmony Performing Arts Group!  It has been a massive blessing in my life and in the lives of my children for the last several years.

Sweet Harmony has quite literally been a dream come true for me. The first year we joined the group, my daughter participated in Singin' in the Rain and I watched every rehearsal. The next year, I started volunteering to help with the theater productions and then took an adult Shakespeare class with the incomparable Gigi Peterson. That gave me the courage to audition for Sweet Harmony's adult productions and had the privilege of participating in each of our three shows.

I've served in so many different areas of our program and have come to know and love so many amazing people - especially our teens!  I've loved and learned from each production and look forward to many more.

Theatre Costumes

Camille Chapman

Being the youngest of eight children and becoming an aunt on my fourth birthday, kids have always been a part of my life. From babysitting, to sleepovers with nieces and nephews, to serving with them in my church for 13+ years, it's only natural to be involved with the kids in Sweet Harmony!

Now I am a mother of six of my own: five energetic boys and one spit fire girl. We have been a part of choir since the very first day. My kids are now also involved with theatre and dance classes. They love it!

I have loved dressing up since I was little. Not only for Halloween, but for school plays, dances, concerts, and just for the heck of it. My kids love making costumes and dressing up as much as I did. Now, I get to dress up all of the youth involved in choir and some of the theatre productions.

Kids and costumes. What could be better than that!

Shelly Stephen
Head Pianist

Shelly Stephen

Shelly has always loved music. She began playing the piano at 8 years old, and the clarinet at age 11. She was involved in band, choir, and orchestra groups in high school. In college she majored in instrumental education, learning the basics of every band and orchestra instrument. She has taught piano and clarinet lessons for over 20 years. She loves music and has really enjoyed being able to make wonderful music with the Sweet Harmony family.
